In the next month the process to review the NZ Baby Friendly (BF) Documents will get underway.
The New Zealand documents 2020 will align with the new Baby Friendly Health Initiative (BFHI) Guidance from WHO / UNICEF 2018 within the context of New Zealand’s maternity and well child systems.
The Guidance complements the 2017 WHO Guideline: protecting, promoting and supporting breastfeeding in facilities providing maternity and newborn services; and is intended for all those who set policy for, or offer care to, pregnant women, families and infants: governments; national managers of maternal and child health programmes in general, and of breastfeeding.
The new implementation guidance can be accessed via this link:-
There will be consultation with the sector November 2018 to February 2019. We have released a new pamphlet (see below) on the revised Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding to help begin the discussion on how New Zealand will implement them. BFHI Coordinators may want to start using them with staff in preparation for the changes next year. Copies are available from NZBA.
It is very encouraging to hear that one of five priority areas for the Ministry of Health is ‘Improving our maternity systems’. The Ministry's work has identified progressing the updated New Zealand Breastfeeding Strategy as soon as possible. This work is being led by Kass Jane.
